A two-month journey through the Australian Coast is being halted days after the death of an senior lady who was stranded by the ship on a remote tropical isle.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but separated from the party for a rest. The ship sailed away leaving her and came back several hours later after the crew realised the passenger was unaccounted for.

A large-scale hunt found her remains the following day.

Officials are looking into the event, in coordination with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the voyage organizer said that passengers and personnel on the ship were notified that the rest of the cruise had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he mentioned that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Officials also published an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would attend the liner in the port city upon its return.

Sequence of Incidents

The liner originally sailed from the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the journey at the time of the elderly woman's death. The tropical location was the first stop on the itinerary.

Travelers on board - who generally pay substantial amounts of money to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the choice of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The daughter of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "surprised and distressed that the ship left the location after an planned tour without my mother".

In her statement, she characterized her mum as an "active 80-year-old" who was a participant of a hiking group.

"Based on limited details we have been told, it seems that there was a breakdown of attention and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She further stated that she wished the inquiry would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have done that might have saved Mother's life".

"Based on information from the police that it was a exceptionally warm day, and mum fell ill on the uphill trek," she stated.

"They requested her to return, alone. Then the boat left, apparently without performing a roll call.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or shortly after, she passed away, by herself."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the organization was "collaborating extensively with investigators to assist their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had provided its full support to the family.

Maritime Business Procedures

The vessel serves up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty staff, according to company information. It was specially constructed to access distant regions of Australia's coastline and is outfitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to take individuals on day excursions.

Events such as this are rare, and cruise ships have systems to document which travelers are embarking or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," an authority commented.

Vessel operators regard these procedures with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such occurrences from taking place," the expert added.

"This appears to be probably a surprising - and sad - isolated incident."
