Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
