A Powerful Milestone as Liam Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent manager that understands football inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, as the Blues' first black footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this news fails to move me."

These were the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club named Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls the London club.

Statistics show just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including those in interim positions – in the Premier League since its inception 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands this community," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a household that champions equality… that's impactful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and let the man get on with the job."

What Do the Statistics Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager in 1996 and became the top flight's first black head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour across the English game corresponds with an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

According to a BFP 2023 study, 43% of top-flight footballers are from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, analysis from the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching positions, according to data from 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of talent that exists in the ethnic minority communities... they want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. We need to continue to work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent British managers presently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails the continent's remaining big five divisions in terms of national managers.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight coaches in Serie A are from Italy, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British managers from an academy background are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness someone land that job with his background and we hope he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered to tackling inequality in football and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he followed a path in management. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: that significant under-representation results in misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "passionate", but said he could relate to the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach make a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their time together at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Blues.

The Blues had the Premier League's first black manager in Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
